With 25% of their workforce reaching 55 years or older, manufacturers are getting creative with employment policies and practices.

The goal? Retain these skilled workers as long as possible, and develop systems to capture and impart their institutional knowledge to new employees.

The Manufacturing Institute, a nonprofit education and workforce partner of the National Association of Manufacturers, surveyed leaders in the industry last year.

The findings show sophisticated measures are being adopted to systematically alleviate the competitive challenges created by a workforce crisis, and aging workers are key to that effort.
